1600 East John Street Apartments

historic place

The 1600 East John Street Apartments in Seattle, Washington, is a historic place. This building, known as the Anhalt Apartment Building, was permitted in 1930 and opened in 1931. It was designed by Frederick William Anhalt, a builder whose work influenced many Seattle neighborhoods. The building showcases the Tudor Revival architectural style, with distinctive features like decorative stucco and half-timbering. In 1968, Group Health Cooperative acquired the building and converted it to office space. This use continued until 2009. After a period of vacancy, the property was reconverted into apartment homes in 2014. This reconversion involved restoring 24 original units and adding 15 new ones. The City of Seattle's Landmarks Preservation Board designated it a Seattle Landmark on October 17, 2012. This building is historically significant for its architectural style and its association with Frederick Anhalt.
