Alaska Trade Building
historic place
The Alaska Trade Building, located on First Avenue near Seattle's Pike Place Market, is a historic place in King County. It was erected in 1909. Built by James H. Steele and designed by architect John O. Taft, this building was notable for its construction. It was one of the first in the area to use reinforced steel, concrete, and brick, and was advertised as completely fireproof. The Alaska Trade Building is historically significant for its association with The Seattle Union Record, which was the country's only Union-owned daily newspaper. The newspaper moved into this building in 1921. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its history reflects a period of innovation in construction and the influence of labor movements in Seattle.
