The notable downtown building was designed by architect John Graham, Sr. Construction started in February 1928, and the store opened in August 1929. This Art Deco style building originally had four stories and a basement, covering over twelve acres. It was a significant development, occupying an entire city block. Four more stories were added in 1955. The Bon Marche building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. It operated as a flagship department store for decades, eventually becoming Macy's, which closed in 2020. Today, the building is being redeveloped for new retail and office spaces, maintaining its historical presence. This site represents a key part of Seattle's commercial and architectural heritage.
