Cambridge Apartments

historic place

The Cambridge Apartments, located in Seattle's First Hill neighborhood, is recognized as a historic place. This ten-story building was completed in 1923. Designed by architect Sherwood D. Ford, it features a Classical Revival style, clad in red brick, stucco, and terra cotta. At the time of its completion, the Cambridge Apartments was heralded as Seattle's largest apartment building. It was also the city's first concrete high-rise apartment building. The structure was an early example of the high-rise buildings that would later define First Hill. Originally, it operated as an innovative apartment-hotel, providing residents with both apartment privacy and hotel amenities. The Cambridge Apartments is individually listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It has since been rehabilitated to provide affordable housing, continuing its role in the community. Its historical significance lies in its representation of early 20th-century urban development and housing innovation in Seattle.
