Colman Automotive Building

historic place

Welcome to the Colman Automotive Building in Seattle, Washington. This historic place, located in King County, was constructed between 1915 and 1916. Architects Webster and Ford designed the building, which was built by Hans Pederson. The original owner was the J.M. Colman Company, a real estate trust associated with Seattle pioneer James Colman's family. The Colman Automotive Building initially served as a car dealership and repair shop. It was a significant part of Seattle's early "Auto Row" district. In 1917, the building housed dealerships for Stanley Steamer cars and United Motors, which distributed brands such as Reo and Dart. By 1937, it also operated as a gas station. In 2013, the Colman Automotive Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. A 2012 restoration helped preserve its original exterior. This site remains one of the last surviving, unaltered buildings from Seattle's early automotive era. It offers a direct link to the city's automotive past.
