Colonial Hotel, Seattle
historic place
The Colonial Hotel is a historic place in Seattle, Washington, located in King County at 1119-1123 First Avenue. The building, largely as it stands today, was constructed in 1901. Architect Max Umbrecht designed this 1901 completion, which was built upon an earlier, unfinished structure from 1892-1893. The hotel opened during the Klondike Gold Rush boom, operating as a single room occupancy hotel until the 1970s. In 1981 and 1982, the Colonial Hotel underwent rehabilitation. It was then connected to the adjacent Grand Pacific Hotel and converted into apartments, now known as the Colonial Grand Pacific. The Colonial Hotel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and later became a Seattle city landmark. A historical marker, erected in 1986, describes it as 'Another of Umbrecht's Elegant Designs, and an Enlargement and Remodeling of an Earlier Hotel.' This site reflects Seattle's early 20th-century commercial and residential development.
