Dearborn, Henry H., House

historic place

The Henry H. Dearborn House, located in Seattle's First Hill neighborhood, is a historic place in King County. This single-family residence was completed in 1907. It was designed in 1904 by architect Henry Dozier for Seattle real estate developer Henry H. Dearborn. Henry H. Dearborn, an investment banker, moved to Seattle in the 1880s. He played a role in the development of the city's tidelands and influenced transcontinental railroad development. Dearborn accumulated wealth through his real estate firm, selling tidelands property to the railway in 1903. He built this house on First Hill after his retirement. Dearborn died in February 1909, two years after the house's completion. The house exhibits an American Foursquare architectural style, featuring classical embellishments, Prairie School stained glass windows, and French doors. In 1953, the residence was converted into a medical office, and later into general office space. Today, the Henry H. Dearborn House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, having been added on January 23, 1998. It is also recognized as a Seattle Landmark. Since 1997, the building has served as the headquarters for Historic Seattle. This house is one of the few remaining substantial single-family residences from the early 20th century in Seattle's First Hill area.
