Dunn Gardens

historic place

Dunn Gardens, a historic place in Seattle, King County, began in 1914 when Arthur Dunn purchased ten acres for a family summer retreat. In 1915, the renowned Olmsted Brothers landscape architecture firm, based in Brookline, Massachusetts, was commissioned to design the property. Their plan, delivered in 1916, shaped the gardens with curving paths, open lawns, and woodland areas. Following Arthur Dunn's death in 1945, the estate was divided among his children. His son, Edward B. Dunn, a horticulturist, developed a woodland garden on his portion, starting in 1947. The property, now approximately 7.5 acres, was placed under the care of the E.B. Dunn Historic Garden Trust, established in 1993. Dunn Gardens was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. It stands as a significant example of early 20th-century landscape design in the Pacific Northwest.
