Fire Station No. 18, Seattle, Washington

historic place

Fire Station No. 18, located in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood, was erected in 1911. Designed by architects Bebb and Mendel, the building features a modified Germanic style, evident in its red brick construction, stepped gables, and large overhanging eaves. It was originally built to accommodate horse-drawn fire engines. The station served the community continuously for 63 years, making it the longest-operating firehouse in Seattle's history. In 1976, the city retired the station, and Historic Seattle acquired it for renovation and adaptive reuse. Fire Station No. 18 is a designated Seattle Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Over the years, the building has housed various restaurants, including Hi-Life, and as of 2024, it is occupied by Fuego Restaurant and Lounge. This site matters historically as a well-preserved example of early 20th-century fire station architecture and for its long service to the city.
