Fourth Church of Christ, Scientist

historic place

The building at 8th Avenue and Seneca Street in Seattle's First Hill neighborhood, now known as Town Hall Seattle, was originally the Fourth Church of Christ, Scientist. Construction of this historic place began in 1916 and was completed in two stages by 1922. Portland architect George Foote Dunham designed the structure. He employed a distinctive Roman Revival style, which was popular among Christian Science churches at the time. The building features a high front portico with six two-story pillars and a high arched ceiling. Its exterior is clad in white glazed terra cotta. The Fourth Church of Christ, Scientist congregation was the sole occupant of the building until 1998. It was then sold and converted into Town Hall Seattle, becoming a venue for various cultural and civic events. This building is a well-preserved example of ecclesiastical architecture from the early 20th century in Seattle.
