Graham, J. S., Store

historic place

The J.S. Graham Store, a historic place in Seattle, Washington, stands at 119 Pine Street. This four-story commercial building was erected in 1919. Architect A.B. Doyle designed it in the Renaissance Revival style, notable for its elaborate terra cotta facade. J.S. Graham, who arrived in Seattle in 1889, established his women's apparel store here. The store's 1919 construction was key to shifting Seattle's retail core northward from Pioneer Square. The J.S. Graham Store closed in 1929 with the Great Depression. After its original use, the building served as offices and banks. An extensive 1973 renovation maintained its exterior. Designated a City of Seattle landmark in 1986, the J.S. Graham Store remains a significant example of Renaissance Revival architecture.
