Medical Dental Building

historic place

The Medical Dental Building is a historic place in Downtown Seattle, King County, located at 509 Olive Way. It opened in May 1925. The building was conceived in 1921 by local businessmen to establish a central medical and dental facility. Architect John Alfred Creutzer designed the original 18-story structure in the Late Gothic Revival style, featuring terra cotta cladding over a reinforced concrete frame. At its completion, it was the third-tallest building worldwide to exclusively use reinforced concrete construction. A 1950 addition, in the Moderne style, expanded the building. The Medical Dental Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006 and designated a Seattle Landmark that same year. It continues its original purpose, housing medical and dental practices. This site is historically significant for its role as Seattle's early premier medical center and for its innovative construction.
