Old Public Safety Building, Seattle

historic place

The Old Public Safety Building, also known as the Yesler Building or 400 Yesler Building, is located at 400 Yesler Way in Seattle, Washington. Designed by architect Clayton D. Wilson, the building was completed in 1909. It initially served as Seattle's third City Hall. The building housed various municipal functions, including the local police, courts, and an emergency hospital, along with the city's health and sanitation departments. The Mayor and City Council also occupied the building temporarily. In 1916, after the Mayor and City Council relocated, the structure was renamed the Public Safety Building. The emergency hospital continued operations until 1951, when the city vacated the premises. The building was later restored in the mid-1970s. Today, the Old Public Safety Building is recognized for its historical importance and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
