Storey, Ellsworth, Cottages Historic District

historic place

Welcome to the Storey, Ellsworth, Cottages Historic District in Seattle, Washington. This historic place is located in King County. Architect Ellsworth Prime Storey began building these cottages in 1912. The first four low-cost rental units were completed that year. The remaining eight cottages on the hillside were largely finished by 1913. Originally, there were twelve cottages; eleven remain intact today. These buildings represent early, small-scale examples of the Western Stick Style. Storey utilized native wood economically and expressively. The cottages are also noted for their harmonious, terraced placement on a wooded hillside. In 1959, the Washington State Chapter of the American Institute of Architects cited the cottages for their fine scale, excellent proportion, simple use of local materials, and skillful site planning. The Ellsworth Storey Cottages Historic District was established in 1976. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These cottages continue to be owned and maintained by the architect's family. This district is historically significant for its contribution to the architectural tradition of Seattle and the Pacific Northwest.
