The Historic Schooner Martha in Seattle
historic place
The Schooner Martha, a historic vessel in Seattle, Washington, was originally built in 1907 in San Francisco. She was designed by B.B. Crowninshield and named for Martha Fitzmaurice Hanify. Actor James Cagney owned the schooner from 1934 to 1943. In 1968, Edgar Kaiser brought the Martha to Washington state. Despite a significant accident in Seattle in 1976, the Martha was restored. Her historical importance was formally recognized in November 2001, when she was entered into the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the Schooner Martha is Washington's oldest operational schooner. Based in Seattle, The Schooner Martha Foundation uses her for sail training programs, preserving maritime heritage and skills. She remains a tangible link to early 20th-century yachting.
