University Bridge
historic place
The University Bridge is a historic place located in King County, Seattle, Washington. It opened on July 1, 1919, initially known as the Eastlake Avenue Bridge. The bridge received its current name, University Bridge, on June 30, 1919. By 1930, the bridge required significant work. It underwent an extensive rebuild from 1932 to 1933. During this reconstruction, timber approaches were replaced with concrete and steel, and the wooden paving was updated with open steel-mesh grating. This marked one of the first applications of open steel-mesh grating in the United States. The reconstructed bridge opened on April 7, 1933. The University Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 16, 1982. It continues to connect the Eastlake and University District neighborhoods over Portage Bay. The bridge is historically significant for its engineering and its role in Seattle's transportation network.
