Victorian Apartments, Seattle, Washington
historic place
The Victorian Apartments, located in Seattle's King County, were constructed in 1891. Originally situated at South 10th Avenue and Weller Street, this building was relocated in 1908 or 1909 as part of the extensive Jackson Street regrade project. It is a notable example of Late Victorian architecture, characterized by details such as fishscale shingles and decorative spindlework. The Victorian Apartments hold significant historical value as Seattle's only pre-1900 apartment building that remains in an unaltered condition. Its importance was formally recognized when it was designated a Seattle Landmark in 1979. The building was further listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. By the 1980s, the structure had deteriorated, leading to a rehabilitation project in 1992 and 1993. This effort transformed the building into 14 units of low-income housing, preserving a unique piece of Seattle's past. The Victorian Apartments offer a tangible link to the city's late 19th-century development.
