Washington Hall

historic place

Washington Hall, located in Seattle, King County, was erected in 1908. The Danish Brotherhood in America built it as a fraternal lodge, dance hall, and settlement house for Danish immigrants. The hall quickly became a hub for social and cultural activities for diverse ethnic communities. Musicians like Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, and Jimi Hendrix performed here. Speakers such as W.E.B. Du Bois and Marcus Garvey also visited. In 1973, the Sons of Haiti, an African-American Masonic lodge, purchased the building. After facing disrepair, Historic Seattle acquired Washington Hall in June 2009 for preservation. It was designated a Seattle Landmark in 2009 and listed in the National Register in 2010. Washington Hall reflects a century of diverse community and cultural activity in Seattle.
