White Center Fieldhouse and Caretaker Cottage

historic place

The White Center Fieldhouse and Caretaker Cottage in Seattle, Washington, are significant historic structures. These buildings were constructed between 1938 and 1940 by the Works Progress Administration, or WPA. They are located within White Center Park, which was established in 1939 as one of the original developments in the King County Park system. The Mountain View Community Club donated the twelve acres of land for their construction. The Fieldhouse and Caretaker Cottage exhibit a Rustic, National Park architectural style. This style includes gabled wood shingle roofs, large covered porches with oversized log support posts, and stone fireplaces. The fieldhouse also features half-log siding. Today, the fieldhouse is known as the White Center Community Center or the 'Log Cabin'. It currently hosts the King County Parks' White Center Teen Program. These buildings are recognized on the National Register of Historic Places and as a King County Landmark. Their construction represents a period of federal investment in public infrastructure during the late 1930s.
