Women's University Club of Seattle
historic place
The Women's University Club of Seattle, a historic place in King County, Washington, was founded in 1914 by Edith Backus and thirteen other prominent Seattle women. Its initial purpose was to provide a clubhouse for college-educated women, fostering interests in liberal arts and sciences, and serving as a center for cultural and social activities. The club first occupied a one-story building on Fifth Avenue, opening in October 1914. The current three-story Georgian Revival style building, located at 1105 Sixth Avenue, was constructed in 1922. Architects Abraham H. Albertson and Édouard Frère Champney designed this clubhouse. The Women's University Club of Seattle was added to the National Register of Historic Places in July 2009. It was also designated a Seattle Landmark, with the ordinance signed in April 2009. This site is historically significant as a purpose-built downtown women's clubhouse.
