Teapot Dome Service Station

historic place

In Zillah, Yakima County, Washington, stands the Teapot Dome Service Station, a historic place built in 1922 by Jack Ainsworth. This structure is shaped like a teapot, complete with a handle and spout. It was created as a humorous reminder of the Teapot Dome oil lease scandal of the Harding Administration. In that scandal, Secretary of the Interior Albert Fall was imprisoned for accepting bribes. An example of roadside novelty architecture, the station was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. It was relocated in 1978 for Interstate 82 construction, and again in 2012 to its current site at 117 First Avenue. Today, it serves as Zillah's visitor's center. This unique building offers a tangible link to a notable period in American history.
