As of October 16, 2026, Brazil's space institute reports both biomes at record lows for the 12 months ended July 31, 2026, with the Amazon at 3,335 square kilometers, down 42% year-over-year, and the Cerrado at 5,516 square kilometers, down 24%, continuing an accelerated decline since President took office in 2023. Brazil Amazon Deforestation Hits Record Low

Brazil's space agency INPE reported on October 16, 2026 that Amazon deforestation fell to a record low of 3,335 square kilometers in the twelve months ended July 31, 2026, down 42 percent from the prior year and smaller than Mallorca. Clearing in the neighboring Cerrado savanna also hit a record low, down 24 percent to 5,516 square kilometers.

The decline accelerated since President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took office in 2023. It matters for ranching and industrial agriculture, which drove past Cerrado conversion, as available new land shrinks.
