Pound, Dr. Joseph M. and Sarah, Farmstead

historic place

The Pound Farmstead in Dripping Springs, Texas, was established by Dr. Joseph M. Pound and his wife, Sarah Dunbiken Ward. They settled in this area in 1853. In 1854, the original home was constructed, featuring two log pens made of rough-hewn cypress logs, built with slave labor. Over time, additions were made to the house, incorporating clapboard and board-and-batten siding and square nail construction. The house also featured four cut limestone fireplaces. Dr. Pound, who had served as a U.S. Army private in the U.S.-Mexican War, later became a Confederate surgeon during the Civil War. The Pound home served the community as a hospital, providing care for the sick and wounded. It also hosted Methodist worship services, led by circuit riders. The Pounds raised nine children on this property. The Dr. Joseph M. and Sarah Pound Farmstead became a Texas Historic Landmark in 1963, and a historical marker was erected in 1965. This site in Hays County preserves the history of early settlement and community development in Dripping Springs.
