Quarters Number 1, Fort Bliss
historic place
Quarters Number 1, also known as Pershing House, is a historic place within the Fort Bliss Main Post Historic District in El Paso, Texas. It was built in 1910. This Classical Revival style building served as the residence for the Fort Bliss post commander. General Edgar Zell Steever II was an early occupant from 1910 to 1914. General John J. Pershing resided here from January 1914 to 1916, during the Mexican Revolution. In October 1911, the first 48-star flag of the United States was raised in front of the house. This marked the pending statehood of New Mexico and Arizona. The house also hosted notable guests such as Buffalo Bill and Pancho Villa. During World War II, it temporarily housed members of the Women's Army Corps. Quarters Number 1 was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. Today, it preserves artifacts and documents from its early 20th-century history. This structure remains a key part of Fort Bliss's historical landscape.
